The Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion invites nominations for the following awards to be presented in Fall 2017.
Advocate for Equity in Accessibility Award
Established in 2016, the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which enables individuals with physical, emotional and learning disabilities to more fully engage society, the Advocate for Equity in Accessibility Award honors IUPUI faculty and staff who go above and beyond in service to and in support of students with disabilities. Recipients of this award take additional measures to ensure that all students can and do participate more fully in campus activities. In addition to presenting each winner with a plaque during the Annual Diversity Reception in September, recipients’ names are added to the Advocates for Equity in Accessibility Awards wall plaque in Taylor Hall where their commitment to students with disabilities will be honored for years to come. This large wall-mounted plaque is close to the bust of Joseph Taylor, IUPUI’s first Dean of Liberal Arts who was the father of a special needs child and strong supporter of IUPUI’s Adaptive Educational Services and students with disabilities. Nomination Deadline: September 1.
Letters of nomination for the Advocate for Equity in Accessibility Award should include the staff or faculty member’s name, department, position and direct supervisor’s title (for notification purposes) as well as a 1-2 page narrative of the ways in which s/he serves as an “advocate for equity in accessibility” for IUPUI students. IUPUI students, staff and faculty are encouraged to nominate deserving staff and faculty members.
Multicultural Impact Staff Award
Awarded during the Chancellor’s Employee Recognition Convocation in November, the Multicultural Impact Award recognizes outstanding staff members who promote a climate where diversity—broadly defined—is valued, accepted and energizes our understanding of one another across multiple differences. Recipients of this award create opportunities and open doors for those often excluded. They are social justice champions who dedicate countless hours and tremendous energy toward advocacy, support and empowerment of IUPUI staff and students. Recipients recognize that diversity, in all of its manifestations and intersections, is what makes IUPUI the thriving educational leader it has become. Whether equity and inclusion are in their job description or included in the work done “after hours,” recipients of the Multicultural Impact Staff Award always exceed all expectations, serve as role models for those who want to empower diverse students and staff and contribute to IUPUI’s inclusive campus climate. Nomination Deadline: October 6.
Letters of nomination for the Multicultural Impact Staff Award should include the staff member’s name, department, position and direct supervisor’s name (for notification purposes), as well as a 1-2 page narrative of the ways in which s/he has contributed to an inclusive campus climate at IUPUI. Specific examples of the ways the nominee has supported and/or advocated for diversity are encouraged, especially as they demonstrate the staff member’s willingness to play a much-needed role, ensure the success of others or create opportunities for diverse students and staff.
