How important the topic is and how strong and eye opening the facts about stereotypes are. The way the class is setup is very good because you learn about your social identities and how that impacts the way you interact with others first.
I have utilized the communication skills I learned in MLEP. I am still working on active listening rather than listening to receive a reply but it is a skill that I have continued to work on since MLEP. I also utilize recognizing words that can be offensive that are in my vocabulary that I need to change, for instance, calling something "ghetto".
Some strengths of MLEP would be opening my eyes to a whole another perspective.
The program provided me the language I was seeking to talk about issues that I am know work on after graduation. I enjoyed learning about pronouns, gender, socialization, power, privilege and more with other students in a comfortable space.
I have become more aware of everyday microaggressions, and have learned how to change my behavior and help others identify microaggressions.
Facilitator goes beyond measure to truly see that students succeed
It is empowering and lead me to think about things differently than I did beforehand. It opened my mind in terms of how I think about diversity, empowerment, and social justice. It allowed me to meet people I may not have otherwise, and make an impact that I did not know was possible before. I learned more about myself and others.
I am continuing to learn more about my own identities and how they shape my personal experiences as well as others. With the world we currently live in it is extremely important to be conscious of what others may be experiencing.
Be able to share your culture with others at the same time learn from others. Communication, listening, and respect.
I think the strengths of the program include the inclusive environment the leader offers to facilitate sensitive and often times ignored topics.
The Multicultural Leadership Empowerment Program helped to open my eyes and has allowed me to see things differently, and from different perspectives. In realizing that this world is comprised of more than just my beliefs, MLEP has helped me to get a jumpstart on my journey of being enlightened and aware of the diversity that exists around me.
