Initiatives

Educating, advocating, engaging, and empowering the IU Indianapolis community

The Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion creates and implements timely initiatives that move our mission, vision, and goals forward. We design responsive policies, action strategies, and changes in practice to make sure that diversity, equity, and inclusion are embedded in the framework of everything IU Indianapolis does. We also work with the Office of Community Engagement to forge nurturing partnerships with the Indianapolis community.

Antiracism at IU Indianapolis

As the nation reeled from the news of the violent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Dreasjon Reed, and George Floyd, Chancellor Nasser Paydar issued a statement condemning the violence against People of Color and reaffirming the IU Indianapolis campus’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. In addition, he created the IU Indianapolis Action Committee—which includes students, staff, faculty, and administrators—and charged them with the task of developing additional initiatives to enhance the university's anti-racism programs. Within weeks, the committee generated a dynamic list calling for the expansion, continuation, reintroduction, and creation of anti-racist programs to engage students, staff, faculty, and the local community. Understanding that anti-racism work never ends, the committee recommended multi-pronged, multi-year initiatives with assessment measures that enable change, adaptation, and growth over time.
