Land Acknowledgment

IU Indianapolis Land Acknowledgment

IU Indianapolis acknowledges our location on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Miami, Potawatomi and Shawnee people. We honor the heritage of Native peoples, what they teach us about the stewardship of the earth and their continuing efforts today to protect the planet. Founded in 1969, IU Indianapolis stands on the historic homelands of Native peoples and, more recently, that of a vibrant Black community, also displaced. As the present stewards of the land, we honor them all as we live, work and study at IU Indianapolis.

Native Acknowledgment at IU Indianapolis: A best practice

In keeping with its commitment to advance social justice and equity, IU Indianapolis endorses Native acknowledgment as a best practice for event organizers using space within the school.

Through Their Eyes Memorial Scholarship

We as a campus continue to look for ways to tell their stories and pay our respects as we live, work and study at IU Indianapolis. The Through Their Eyes Memorial Scholarship was designed to recognize the individuals and families who once built their lives on this land.

Students who are related to the families displaced by the development of the IU Indianapolis campus and are pursuing their first undergraduate degree on our campus are eligible for the award of up to $15,000, renewable for up to four years.
